May Photo A Day : Day 16 : Mailbox

Mails delivered at home hold a special place in my heart. There is some old-world charm to it, it reminds you of an era gone by. And in those days, I loved going to the post offices to get the stamps, for book-post etc. I quite enjoyed the whole process (Yeah! I am a sucker for all things old-world!). The post-office near my place is a really old 2 rooms settlement with dim dim lighting and some aunties and uncles behind the counters busy in their world. Really! But I love it. It has that laid-back feeling to it, like the time has stopped here. And it still is the same!

The post office in this picture is however is way up in the hills of Jammu & Kashmir, Vaishno Devi Bhawan complex to be precise. It was a quaint little place situated at one of the turns in the complex. It was so nice to read the India Post board. Sadly, it had closed down for the day by the time we reached there.

Cute. Isn't it?

  1. Oh yes, the world inside a post office is still so old, slow and sluggish. Though computers have made an entry but those who operate them have still not adapted themselves to the newer machines. When we were in Jammu, I used to visit a post office every month to deposit in an RD for our landlady... I always had this urge to update the entry on my own on the computer! :)

  5. Even though the post office today is computerized, the pace is very slow. They did a better job manually.

  8. I have been to just one post office in India, while in college, to buy stamps and stuff. "Uncles and aunties busy in their worlds" ... this I remember very well! :)

  14. I too enjoyed going to the post office to buy stamps and inland letters. I love sending cards by post, but now it is all ecards and emails :( My daughter sent me a lovely ecard for mother's day but I can't hold it in my hands.
